When people think of oak homes, their mind often drifts to oak beams overhead, cosy panelling and a fire crackling in the grate, reminiscent of an alpine lodge. And while this is of course possible (and very lovely), there are also several ways in which an English oak frame can bring a sense of summertime to your living quarters. Here are a few examples we’ve worked with over the years:
There’s nothing quite like an oak bedroom to wake up to, and one of the joys of a self-build is that you can design it yourself. Many people choose to have light flooding into the room, and this makes for a fresh and country-cottage style bedroom (we love the crisp white linen in this example). Many people often opt to increase space (as well as the value of their home) by adding a spare bedroom in an extension or conversion. This also has interesting and unique structural benefits, such as gorgeous curved sling-braces.
The dining room:
Whether adding a second dining room, or creating the hub of your family meal time, a dining room can be vastly improved with the use of clever glazing, such as this example from ourHartley Farm project. There is sometimes the misconception that these rooms are dark and enclosed, with heavy curtains and foreboding furniture. Why not bring the outside in by opting for a large table in the conservatory or extension? The scenery is always changing, and as night falls candlelight will make a dinner party look sensational. Summer gives the opportunity to really appreciate your garden and grounds, while also making the most of gatherings with friends and family over meals.
What could be nicer than fixing dinner while watching the world go by outside? In this example, the kitchen is bathed in light which complements the cream hues and natural wooden finish. The traditional frame gives the whole room a wonderfully rustic feel, and there’s a real summer time freshness to the room. The kitchen island and the charming, farmhouse-esque stools also have a hint of a French chateaux about them, making us think of holidays in the South of France.
