The latest project for English Oak Buildings is the addition of a large oak extension to an older cottage in Walton-in-Gordano, a village and civil parish in North Somerset. The property lies on the coast between Clevedon and Portishead, and as such the new oak extension has stunning views out over the Severn estuary and Wales, and was designed to take advantage of this incredible scenery.
When the client bought the property a few years ago, they always had the concept of adding an oak extension in mind. The existing single story extension was tired, run-down and unattractive, so this was removed and we could then add a large two storey timber frame extension.
The design also made accessing and using the various rooms in the existing cottage easier, since the floor-plan previously had meant some rooms had to be walked through to get to others.
One problem we had with this project was that access to the site was tricky. We had to bring the timber and the crane to the site down an adjacent farmer’s field. Only with the expertise of all involved did the frame get installed.
This is a perfect example of a client who, with the addition of a beautiful, well-situated oak extension, will recoup the money invested in the property many times over. The incredible aspect now matches the location, and it’s a cottage to be proud of!
